Our News: G-20 Toronto: Restrictive Canadian border requirements leveled against G-20-bound journalists
"Terrorizing Dissent" and "Democracy 101" director targeted on way to cover Toronto protests

G-20 Toronto: Restrictive Canadian border requirements leveled against G-20-bound journalists JUNE 24TH/2:31PM EST—In a telephone conversation with the RNC '08 Report, protest film-maker Vlad Teichberg—director of the 2008 RNC documentary Terrorizing Dissent, and 2009 G-20 documentary Democracy 101—described his experiences at the border with Canada, while on his way to cover the G-20 in Canada, taking place this weekend. The RNC '08 Report, which has worked with Teichberg on a variety of documentary projects since the 2008 RNC, will continue to follow the story and post updates as news breaks. Our News: RNC 8 back in court for hearings

RNC 8 back in court for hearings On Monday, May 3, the RNC 8 returned to court for several days of evidentiary hearings leading up to the joint trial of the eight that begins on October 25. Motions to be heard include those to suppress evidence from the various raids, for bail reductions, for discovery materials relating to entrapment attempts by undercover police, and for dismissal on the grounds of a lack of probable cause. Observing the hearings, court watchers from the RNC 8 Defense Committee summarized the defense argument: “The main case of the government rests on a satirical video, guilt by association, statements and actions of people who are not the defendants, and discussions by the defendants that did not constitute any kind of a real plan or conspiracy to commit riot or damage to property.” [Read more]

About: Why the RNC '08 Report deserves your support
Donate to support accountability and independent media!

Over a year after the 2008 Republican National Convention, the RNC '08 Report continues to produce original research, and compile and archive material relating to the 2008 RNC which is used widely by legal defense teams, journalists, and activists who are working in the aftermath of this and similar events. Your support helps us both keep up and expand our work to challenge over-policing and state injustices at National Special Security Events in the United States, as well as tracking and documenting what is clearly a globalizing pattern of repression of dissent. [Read more]

Our News: From St. Paul to Pittsburgh: Citizen Media is Not a Crime

From St. Paul to Pittsburgh: Citizen Media is Not a Crime My first experience with a National Special Security Event (NSSE) was the 2008 Republican National Convention (RNC), held between September 1st and 4th in St. Paul, Minnesota. Following years of work developing different areas of the independent media around the world, I co-hosted a variety of independent media from around the country in what became known as “the Indymedia Lounge” during the Convention, and was able to witness first-hand how independent media functions during a large-scale political event. The right to practice citizen journalism and freely carry the tools of reporting is a fundamental right in any free society. [Read more]

The G-20 Summit is being held on September 24th-25th, 2009, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Mirroring the "RNC Welcoming Committee" during the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, MN, already local anti-authoritarian groups in Pennsylvania are preparing protests for the G-20 Convention, under the name the "Pittsburgh G-20 Resistance Project".  [Read more]

Our News: Letter to Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan
"The RNC has left the Cities, apparently the Cities cannot let go of the RNC overkill mentality of policing"

Letter to Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan Enough is enough. We are supposed to be living in a free society. It is the job of government officials to guard those freedoms jealously. It is therefore totally unacceptable that police deploy in such large numbers for small events or—frankly—even at all if no crime is being committed. The job of the police is not to intimidate citizens, yet this is exactly what is going on these days. It is completely disgusting to see this in America. Something needs to be done. A clear message needs to be sent to end—for once and all—such intimidation of the community. The RNC has left the Cities, apparently the Cities cannot let go of the RNC overkill mentality of policing. I urge you to take immediate, unambiguous action. [Read more]

Our News: Why St. Paul City Attorney John Choi is a danger to public safety

Why St. Paul City Attorney John Choi is a danger to public safety Police actions towards protesters at the 2008 Republican National Convention were excessive and have to date gone completely unchecked. The ongoing dismissals of RNC cases and hung juries underline this fact. City officials who have done nothing to put the police on notice that they must tread lightly at First Amendment events are responsible for creating a political climate where the freedom of speech of all can be said to be being seriously violated.  [Read more]

Our News: The RNC '08 Report: Looking Back at the First Four Months

The RNC '08 Report: Looking Back at the First Four Months Looking at the Google Analytics web statistic account attached to the site, statistics since its early October launch show a relatively steady growth rate, consistent with an archive-type site on a single issue. Since the site’s launch almost exactly four months ago, there have been 27,000 page views on the site, an average of 225 a day, and 5,000 total visits from just over 3,000 people, meaning that approximately 60% of those using the site are return visitors. When I look a more recent statistics, there are obviously more people who know about the site these days than when it was launched 4 months ago. In just the last month, January 1st–February 1st, the site saw 2,000 visits and 10,000 page views, with visitors spending an average of 6 minutes on the site.  [Read more]

Photographs: Installation of RNC photo exhibit "Looking Back, Moving Forward"

Installation of RNC photo exhibit The premise of the LOOKING BACK, MOVING FORWARD exhibit was to offer a community space where people could leave behind, access, or take home as evidence a wide variety of frozen photographic moments from the Republican National Convention that took place in St. Paul, MN in September 2008. The exhibit opened at the Black Dog Coffee and Wine Bar in Lowertown, St. Paul, MN, on January 3rd and closed on January 31st. Community submissions were sought for the exhibit during the month, and from an initial showing of 35 images on Day 1, the exhibit grew to over 300 images. The exhibit is currently scheduled to travel next to Pittsburgh.  [Read more]

RNC Commission Archive: Mass Arrests and the Heffelfinger-Luger Report

Mass Arrests and the Heffelfinger-Luger Report The phrase “mass arrest” appears in the main body of the Heffelfinger-Luger report 11 times. At the official presentation of the report at the St. Paul City Council on January 14th, the phrase was used hesitantly, almost reverentially as if to state the obvious would somehow have been the wrong thing to do.... The RNC Review Commission report deals with one of the clearest problems with police actions—three mass arrests—in a completely unsatisfying way. Mass arrests are illegitimate and unconstitutional because people should only be arrested if they have committed a crime. Mass arrests target the innocent as well as the guilty. They are a form of lazy, intimidating, and civil rights-abusing police work. They expose and exploit the innocent rather than protect and serve them. [Read more]

RNC Commission Archive: Initial Reactions to the Heffelfinger-Luger RNC Commission Report

Initial Reactions to the Heffelfinger-Luger RNC Commission Report I was tempted to preface the title of this article with "Some Very Initial Reactions..." simply because of the sheer size of of the report and its attachments. The Executive Summary is 15 pages long and the Main Report text reaches 82 pages, not including a 6-page index and "Exhibits" which include 21 multipage PDF files, 58 video files ranging in length from 5 seconds to over an hour, and 8 galleries of extremely slow-loading, poorly labeled, high resolution images. Although I was already familiar with around one-quarter of the supplementary documents listed, I'll still need another week to get through it all. [Read more]

Coming/Archived Events: Heffelfinger-Luger RNC Commission report to be presented at St. Paul City Council

On Wednesday January 14th, 2009, the Heffelfinger-Luger RNC Public Safety Commission report is due to be presented at the St. Paul City Council meeting at 3:30pm. If the meeting is anything like the Community Conversation on September 24th, 2008, it'll be something not to miss. [Read more]

Our News: Open letter to Mayor Coleman about releasing RNC CCTV video

Open letter to Mayor Coleman about releasing RNC CCTV video During the course of the Republican National Convention, September 1-September 4, many media sources have reported that police recorded and collected over 6,000 hours of video in downtown Saint Paul from both the network of CCTV security cameras and handheld police video cameras. The American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota filed Data Practice requests on August 22nd and November 13th. The ACLU is just one organization that has filed such requests. Local organization, Communities United Against Police Brutality, filed a data request as early as September 13th. According to the ACLU, the City of St. Paul has stated that they might not release the tapes for another 2-3 years.  [Read more]

Our News: Preparing for the worst: The coming Heffelfinger/Luger report on RNC policing
Due on December 15th, most observers assume a frustrating result

Preparing for the worst: The coming Heffelfinger/Luger report on RNC policing LET THE RNC '08 REPORT ARCHIVE YOUR SUBMISSION TO THE RNC PUBLIC REVIEW SAFETY COMMISSION!
Just a few days after the RNC dust settled, it was announced that the City of St. Paul hired former U.S. Attorney Tom Heffelfinger and former assistant U.S. Attorney Andy Luger to review police plans and how they were carried out during the Republican National Convention. What became immediately clear was that the independent review would not be a fact-finding mission to explore allegations of police wrongdoing or violations of people's rights... [Read more]

RNC 8 endorses Ramsey County Attorney's bid for Minnesotan Governor

RNC 8 press conference outside Susan Gaertner fundraiser From the event's press release: In what may be a shocking turn of events for anyone following the case of the RNC 8, the group is announcing its public endorsement of Susan Gaertner in her candidacy for Governor of Minnesota. Gaertner, the current Ramsey County District Attorney, is responsible for prosecuting all felony cases resulting from the recent Republican National Convention in St. Paul, MN. The RNC 8 are facing charges of Conspiracy to Riot in Furtherance of Terrorism, charges which they maintain are ridiculous and unfounded. Max Specktor, one of the eight, said the charges "show that Gaertner's ambition to serve the public is so strong it even extends into the absurd." [Read more]

Maps & Graphics: Locations of RNC security cameras in downtown St. Paul

Portland Indymedia journalist Alex Lilly mapped out the locations of the security cameras installed for the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, MN. RNC Commission Archive: Submission to the RNC Public Review Safety Commission

Submission to the RNC Public Review Safety Commission While the deadline for submissions to the RNC Commission has passed, the very way the Commission has gone about engaging the public has made it very difficult for the deadline to be met or the Commission to gather the testimony it needs to come to an informed conclusion. Despite a declared $100,000 budget, there were no advertisements in the local media concerning the existence, mandate, nor any submission information for the Commission. If encouraging people to testify to the Commission was important to the Commission this would not have been the case. [Read more]
