Text: G-20 Toronto: Two Chicago Indymedia journalists denied entry to cover G-20 meeting and protests in Canada

G-20 Toronto: Two Chicago Indymedia journalists denied entry to cover G-20 meeting and protests in Canada Two Chicago Indymedia journalists were detained and denied entry to Canada Friday evening, in what is emerging as a dominant dynamic confronting independent journalists seeking to enter the country to cover this weekend’s G20 gathering and protests being organized around it. Besides independent journalists, many activists have been denied entry to Canada, as well, including Medea Benjamin and associates from Code Pink who were seeking to enter for the G20 protests after attending the US Social Forum in Detroit. [Read more]

Pittsburgh G-20 Archive: Secret Investigation Against G-20 Twitterer Has Minnesota Connection

In September 2008, the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, saw considerable pre-emptive arrests of activists and journalists, including raids on independent media spaces and the Tin Can Comms Collective office, which coordinated a series of Twitter feeds during the surrounding protests relating to activist actions, legal support, and street medic teams. This update from an anarchist collective in New York, who saw members raided and arrested for a similar Tin Can Comms Twitter deployment during the September 2009 G-20 protests in Pittsburgh, PA, was reposted anonymously with the above title on Twin Cities Indymedia’s website. Local charges had been dropped against the Pittsburgh G-20 Twitterers because of an ongoing “national” investigation, presumably in lieu of pending but not yet announced federal charges. [Read more]

Judge Edward Wilson sentenced McCoy last month to a $50 fine plus an additional $31 in costs for the conviction on one count of Public Assembly Without a Permit. Four different university students witnessed the collapse of Mr. Tomlinson. "He stumbled towards us from the direction of police and protestors and collapsed," said Peter Apps. "I saw a demonstrator who was a first aider attend to the person who had collapsed. The man was late 40s, had tattoos on his hands, and was wearing a Millwall shirt." [Read more]

Protest organizers claim success after 12 hours; Police report 87 arrests

Climate Camp #2: UK Police Break Up Protester The Camp for Climate Action is promoting the idea that the failed economic system hasn't just created the financial crisis, it's responsible for the climate crisis. They say that trying to tackle climate change with market instruments like carbon trading would hand control of the climate system over to the same bankers, brokers and private traders who caused the financial collapse, and that we need a radically different economy not based on endless growth. They point out that we will not be able to ‘bailout the climate' in the way that governments have had to bailout banks. [Read more]

Text: April 2nd: UK Police Raid G20 Protester Spaces
Echoes of the 2008 RNC in St. Paul, MN

April 2nd: UK Police Raid G20 Protester Spaces As people were organising to leave the convergence space at midday today police raided. 30-40 people attempted to protect the space by blockading the main doors. We then congregated on the top floor and sat in a circle with our arms in the air to show the police that we were not violent. However, the police met us with a taser gun, full riot gear and proceeded to make us lie face down with our hands on the floor. We believe two people were arrested, although we are unsure what they have been charged with. One has been taken to hospital following an injury. The rest were searched, handcuffed and had names, DOB, addresses and photos taken.  [Read more]

Police spoilsports refused their help, conducted thorough search of the vehicle, and moved them along. G20 Convergence Space - Payne House, 8-16 Earl Street, London EC2A 2A1.

New G20 convergence space opened This space is now being squatted as a convergence centre, the space is non-affiliated and welcomes all activist groups (as long as they agree to the 'safer spaces' policy and respect the ideals of the space). We will be hosting a series of workshops, banner making, film nights, info space, cafe and sleeping space. There is enough space for meetings we held, and enough space to house many, many people. However bring your own sleeping materials and comforts. We will try and help, but be prepared to be self-sufficient. Friendly animals are welcome, but there is also one animal-free floor. [Read more]

Video & Audio: RNC 8 Supporters Mobilize as Police Continue Intimidation

On March 27, RNC 8 supporters delivered petitions and letters in song to Ramsey County Attorney Susan Gaertner, demanding she drop the charges. Several plainclothes deputies were present and photographed activists. The next day, the National Day of Solidarity with the RNC 8, supporters held the Tour de Fletcher in Minneapolis, a bike ride to the sites of pre-emptive house raids last August. They were trailed by a disproportionate, multi-jurisdictional police presence which filmed, took photos and recorded license plate numbers outside the ride's conclusion at a benefit chili lunch. One activist was arrested, charged with disorderly conduct and released on bail. Long after the ride concluded and was declared a success, the cops stayed around, prompting many to draw the parallel between the waste of resources on the RNC 8 prosecution and the waste of 20-30 police officers to monitor a legal bike ride and lunch. Other events were held in at least 15 cities nationwide. [Read more]

Text: David McKay Found Guilty
Court Report from Tues. 3/17

In a tumultuous, somewhat stunning turn of events, David McKay's guilty plea was accepted in federal court in Minneapolis Tuesday, a day after Judge Davis indicated that he was unlikely to accept the plea on the basis of evidence pointing to entrapment by FBI informant and horrible human being-extraordinaire Brandon Darby at the original trial. [Read more]

Video & Audio: Interview with Impact, Tin Can Comms Collective, RNC, St. Paul, September 2008

Impact, an activist with the Tin Can Comms Collective, provided logistical communications support for the RNC demonstrations of September 2008 in St. Paul. As local authorities did in conjunction with a number of federal agencies against other activists at the time, from independent media journalists to I-Witness Video to the RNC Welcoming Committee, the working space of the Tin Can Comms collective was pre-emptively raided. Everyone inside was arrested on a flimsy pretext, detained for days, and later released without charge, in effect illegally taking them out of the game.  [Read more]

Legal & Court Documents: Macalester Dorm Raided in February in Hunt for RNC Evidence

According to a search warrant and first-hand account submitted to Twin Cities Indymedia, St. Paul Police executed an RNC-related raid on February 13 at a Macalester College dorm room, with the cooperation of Macalester staff. Although it appears the occupant of the room was not the initial target of the investigation, political literature was seized and has yet to be returned. SPPD Sargeant Julie Maidment prepared and executed the warrant for the residence of a person with “tattoos on both arms”; the person living in the room has none. [Read more]

Twin Cities activists attend swearing-in ceremony of new Ramsey County Deputies

We're Still Crashing Their Parties! Tonight, Twin Cities activists entered Landmark Center in St. Paul at 7:00 PM to attend an open to the public event celebrating the swearing in of six new deputies for the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department. Two of these shining stars were known informants of the RNC Welcoming Committee, Chris Dugger and Rachel Neiting. The one and only Bobby Fletcher awarded the new tools of the state, asserting how proud he was of their "outstanding" work in successfully infiltrating the known "Criminal Anarchist Enterprise" during the RNC. Fletcher continued on how hard it must have been to be undercover, sitting through countless of meetings and even going as far as to "DUMPSTER DIVE," the obscene act of digging through the trash for food. [Read more]

Text: Hung Jury! David McKay is Free (For Now)

The case of United States vs. David McKay was declared a mistrial Monday afternoon when the jury was unable to reach a verdict. McKay was granted a conditional release, provided $25,000 bail or $2,500 bond can be posted. Unless the charges are dropped, a re-trial will commence on March 16. After the jury confirmed it was unable to reach a unanimous decision and a mistrial was declared, prosecutor Asst. U.S. Attorney Paulsen requested that jurors not be permitted to talk to media, that McKay be held in custody, and that McKay be retried within 70 days. [Read more]

Text: Did Darby Entrap McKay? No Verdict Yet After 2nd Day of Jury Deliberations

After 10 hours of deliberation spanning two days, the jury in United States vs. David McKay has yet to reach a verdict. The question before the jury is whether or not McKay was entrapped by Brandon Darby, activist turned FBI informant, to possess unregistered destructive devices (count 1), illegally manufacture the devices (count 2), and possess such devices that had no serial number (count 3). For the entrapment defense to succeed, the jury must decide that Darby "induced or persuaded" McKay to commit the crime, and that McKay had no "intent or disposition" to do so before meeting Darby for the first time at the beginning of March, 2008. [Read more]

Text: First RNC Felony Sentence: Probation - Victory for Court Solidarity

No jail for Joe! Joe Robinson was sentenced this morning on felony first degree property damage stemming from slashed delegate bus tires during the RNC. The judge rejected nearly all the prosecutor's wishes, sentencing Robinson instead to three years probation, a $100 fine and 100 hours of community service in an organization of his choice. The standing-room only courtroom was packed with about 50 friends and supporters, who all stood when Robinson's name was called. Judge Salvador Rosas - soon to become the judge for the RNC 8 - mentioned the action favorably before delivering the sentence, calling it "Gandhi-like." [Read more]
