[Read more] Text: Watchdog's G20 death probe pledge The head of the police watchdog has said the inquiry into the death of a man during the G20 protests will be "independent, fast and effective". The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the death of Ian Tomlinson on 1 April in the City of London. The criminal inquiry began after video footage emerged of Mr Tomlinson apparently being shoved by a policeman.The officer pictured in the footage has been suspended after coming forward. This time it shows the moment a policeman strikes out at Tomlinson before he falls to the ground. Moments after the assault on Ian Tomlinson was captured on video, he suffered a heart attack and died. The Guardian has handed a dossier of evidence to the police complaints watchdog. It sheds new light on the events surrounding the death of the 47-year-old newspaper seller, who had been on his way home from work when he was confronted by lines of riot police near the Bank of England. Four different university students witnessed the collapse of Mr. Tomlinson. "He stumbled towards us from the direction of police and protestors and collapsed," said Peter Apps. "I saw a demonstrator who was a first aider attend to the person who had collapsed. The man was late 40s, had tattoos on his hands, and was wearing a Millwall shirt." The micro-blogging service was heavily used by all those involved with the meeting, be they in the debating chamber, quizzing politicians after briefings, or protesting beyond the police cordon. The Metropolitan Police analysed activity on websites such as Facebook, MySpace and many others to see how many were likely to join the call for protests at the G20. [Read more] Text: April 2nd: UK Police Raid G20 Protester Spaces Echoes of the 2008 RNC in St. Paul, MN As people were organising to leave the convergence space at midday today police raided. 30-40 people attempted to protect the space by blockading the main doors. We then congregated on the top floor and sat in a circle with our arms in the air to show the police that we were not violent. However, the police met us with a taser gun, full riot gear and proceeded to make us lie face down with our hands on the floor. We believe two people were arrested, although we are unsure what they have been charged with. One has been taken to hospital following an injury. The rest were searched, handcuffed and had names, DOB, addresses and photos taken. [Read more] Photographs: G20 Activist Tank Speaks Potent Message About Police Overkill Protest performance art group the "Space Invaders" goes to "protect banks"; Arrested for "impersonating police" The activist group Space Hijackers joined with police to take care of any "bad" demonstrators who might have shown up to anti-G20 protests in the City of London today. At 10:30 this morning they showed up with a CCTV-equipped armoured vehicle in front of the Royal Bank of Scotland and prepared to defend the building. Police spoilsports refused their help, conducted thorough search of the vehicle, and moved them along. They were later arrested outside News International under section 19 of the Police Act (impersonating police) and taken to West End Central police station. This space is now being squatted as a convergence centre, the space is non-affiliated and welcomes all activist groups (as long as they agree to the 'safer spaces' policy and respect the ideals of the space). We will be hosting a series of workshops, banner making, film nights, info space, cafe and sleeping space. There is enough space for meetings we held, and enough space to house many, many people. However bring your own sleeping materials and comforts. We will try and help, but be prepared to be self-sufficient. Friendly animals are welcome, but there is also one animal-free floor.
