G20 Protests: Complaints of heavy-handed tactics after raids on squats The activists had just got up to cook a midday breakfast, after a busy 24 hours spent fighting capitalism, when the armoured police vans pulled up outside their three-storey red-brick squat in east London. A few minutes later riot police wearing balaclavas and carrying Taser stun guns scaled the roof with ladders and ropes and smashed through a trapdoor into the rooms below. Within minutes it was all over. Around 20 protesters were handcuffed, searched and questioned for two hours as part of a very public police response to Wednesday's riots at the Bank of England.

Video & Audio: Climate Camp #2: UK Police Break Up Protester "Climate Camp" at G20
Protest organizers claim success after 12 hours; Police report 87 arrests

Climate Camp #2: UK Police Break Up Protester The Camp for Climate Action is promoting the idea that the failed economic system hasn't just created the financial crisis, it's responsible for the climate crisis. They say that trying to tackle climate change with market instruments like carbon trading would hand control of the climate system over to the same bankers, brokers and private traders who caused the financial collapse, and that we need a radically different economy not based on endless growth. They point out that we will not be able to ‘bailout the climate' in the way that governments have had to bailout banks. [Read more]

Text: Twitter on the front line

There may have been few things that protesters, politicians and activists share, but during the G20 meeting, they were united by their use of Twitter. The micro-blogging service was heavily used by all those involved with the meeting, be they in the debating chamber, quizzing politicians after briefings, or protesting beyond the police cordon. Social media was in use prior to the event too. The Metropolitan Police analysed activity on websites such as Facebook, MySpace and many others to see how many were likely to join the call for protests at the G20. [Read more]

Text: April 2nd: UK Police Raid G20 Protester Spaces
Echoes of the 2008 RNC in St. Paul, MN

April 2nd: UK Police Raid G20 Protester Spaces As people were organising to leave the convergence space at midday today police raided. 30-40 people attempted to protect the space by blockading the main doors. We then congregated on the top floor and sat in a circle with our arms in the air to show the police that we were not violent. However, the police met us with a taser gun, full riot gear and proceeded to make us lie face down with our hands on the floor. We believe two people were arrested, although we are unsure what they have been charged with. One has been taken to hospital following an injury. The rest were searched, handcuffed and had names, DOB, addresses and photos taken.  [Read more]

Text: New G20 convergence space opened
G20 Convergence Space - Payne House, 8-16 Earl Street, London EC2A 2A1.

New G20 convergence space opened This space is now being squatted as a convergence centre, the space is non-affiliated and welcomes all activist groups (as long as they agree to the 'safer spaces' policy and respect the ideals of the space). We will be hosting a series of workshops, banner making, film nights, info space, cafe and sleeping space. There is enough space for meetings we held, and enough space to house many, many people. However bring your own sleeping materials and comforts. We will try and help, but be prepared to be self-sufficient. Friendly animals are welcome, but there is also one animal-free floor. [Read more]
