RNC 8 back in court for hearings Nigel Parry, RNC 08 Report, May 10th, 2010 On Monday, May 3, the RNC 8 returned to court for several days of evidentiary hearings leading up to the joint trial of the eight that begins on October 25. Motions to be heard include those to suppress evidence from the various raids, for bail reductions, for discovery materials relating to entrapment attempts by undercover police, and for dismissal on the grounds of a lack of probable cause. Observing the hearings, court watchers from the RNC 8 Defense Committee summarized the defense argument: “The main case of the government rests on a satirical video, guilt by association, statements and actions of people who are not the defendants, and discussions by the defendants that did not constitute any kind of a real plan or conspiracy to commit riot or damage to property.” [Read more]

Pittsburgh police must release to a citizen review board documents related to officer conduct during last year's Group of 20 economic summit, an Allegheny County judge ruled Thursday. Senior Common Pleas Judge R. Stanton Wettick ordered Chief Nate Harper to comply with a request from the Citizen Police Review Board to turn over the reports for its investigation of how police dealt with protesters during the Sept. 24-25 summit. Following their October 8, 2009 hearing before Judge Teresa R. Warner, the RNC 8 received word today that they will face a single joint trial, not the eight or three separate trials favored by the office of Ramsey County Attorney Susan Gaertner. The defendants were preemptively arrested before the Republican National Convention began last year, following many months of police infiltration and surveillance of their group, the RNC Welcoming Committee, which helped organize lodging, food, and medical and legal aid for those protesting the convention.
