A man accused of tossing a 50-pound sandbag from an overpass onto Interstate 94 during protests of the Republican National Convention last year pleaded guilty to a second-degree felony assault charge today in Ramsey County District Court.
David Terence Mahoney, 24, of Milwaukee, had been facing five counts of second degree assault and five counts of terroristic threats for the incident in which police says he tossed the sandbag from the Fifth Street overpass onto I-94 along a route where delegate buses were traveling last September.
The sandbag thrown by Mahoney didn't strike a vehicle, according to the criminal complaint, but he was directing fellow protesters to throw another sandbag when the group was chased away by a patrol car driven by Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher.
Under a plea agreement, Mahoney will serve up to 90 days in jail. He is to be sentenced July 9.
